Powerful Words: Two of the Most Potent Words You Can Use in Business and in Life

Why do people complain?  

What do they want from you when they come with a grievance?  Yes it’s probably true that they want you to fix the problem, or at the very least make it better.

But in reality what most people want is to be understood.  

They want you to say I’m sorry, and I understand why you are upset.

Think about it.  When you are upset with your spouse and he says that he can understand your point of view and that he’s sorry, don’t you feel immediately better?

Try it next time someone complains to you, be it your husband, kids, customer or mom, do these three things:

1.  Hear them out.  Let them air their whole grievance without interruption

2.  Say the words “I understand how you must feel”

3.  Take deep breaths and let it go.
